And we will preserve you, Russian speech,
The great Russian word.
We will keep you free and pure,
And pass you on to our grandchildren,
Free from bondage forever! Anna Akhmatova

We are seldom given cause to contemplate the reign of Fyodor Alekseyevich (Fyodor III, 1661-1682) who ascended to the throne on February 8 (January 29), 1676. Apparently, the tsar who died early suffered as a child from gout and scurvy. Nevertheless, in his short reign the young tsar was able to carry out several important reforms that had a significant impact on Russia’s future development.

On the anniversaries of classic Russian authors, we tend to talk about their day and age. What is the relevance of Pushkin and Dostoevsky? Are Tolstoy or Turgenev modern? Chekhov's turn has now arrived, as it is the 150th anniversary of his birth that we celebrate. The issue has become a virtual ritual. Following tradition, let us then ask - how is Chekhov relevant?

The last of the pre-revolutionary patriarchs, Adrian, died in Moscow on October 16, 1700. Naturally, everyone expected that the tsar would announce his successor soon after. Late last year in Yasnaya Polyana the ashes of Leo Tolstoy’s son Mikhail were reburied. For many years he had lived in Morocco, and it was in the capital city of Rabat that he had died. In the first half of the 20th century, this North African country, at the time a French protectorate, became a second home for many of our fellow citizens, including representatives of prominent aristocratic families who by the will of fate found themselves in this strange land.

It is well known that the largest Russian diasporas were established only recently - less than twenty years ago. Their formation was associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union, which resulted in nearly twenty-five million Russians and Russian-speakers being separated from their homeland virtually overnight.

Up until the early 1990s, virtually nothing about Paraguay was known in Russia. A distant Latin American country, the fascist dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, the persecution of Communists, a pro-American regime, etc. etc. - this is what came to mind for Soviet citizens upon hearing the word “Paraguay.” It seemed that there was nothing in common between the two countries and that in principle nothing could be. But this was hardly the case.
